Following significant weight loss, some individuals may experience excess skin and soft tissue that does not retract.
Body lift surgery is one option that may be considered to address these changes, depending on your individual needs and clinical assessment.
After significant weight loss, some individuals may experience excess skin and soft tissue that does not conform to their new body shape. In such cases, body procedures may be considered to remove and reposition this tissue.
Common areas affected can include the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, breasts, back, inner thighs, and upper arms. A consultation with a Quayside Specialist will be able to assess your concerns and determine the most appropriate surgical approach.
What is involved in body lift surgery?
A body lift is a combination of surgical procedures that may be considered after significant weight loss to address areas of excess skin and soft tissue. This approach can be tailored to each individual’s needs and may involve multiple procedures performed in stages or as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Procedures That May Be Included in a Body Lift Plan
Each of the following procedures may be considered depending on your specific goals, health status, and clinical assessment:
- Arm lift (Brachioplasty): May reduce excess skin and improve the contour of the upper arms
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy): May reposition the breast tissue and remove excess skin to address changes in breast shape and position.
- Facelift (Rhytidectomy): May address age- or weight-related changes in the face, jowls, and neck.
- Lower body lift: May involve procedures to reshape the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, and outer thighs through the removal of excess skin and tissue.
- Thigh lift: May reduce excess skin along the inner thighs, improving skin surface and contour.
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck): May be used to remove excess abdominal skin and tighten the underlying muscles.
Important Information:
- These procedures are not substitutes for weight-loss surgery or a healthy lifestyle.
- All surgery carries risks and potential complications. Outcomes vary between individuals.
- A consultation with a Quayside Specialists will help determine suitability and plan the most appropriate surgical approach.
Which procedures you wish to undergo will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation with Dr Leo Kim.
Body Lift Recovery
During recovery, patients may be advised to prevent situations where bending or lifting is required. This can be restricted for the first couple of weeks.
Depending on the intensity of the procedure, Dr Leo Kim may also instruct you to avoid standing fully upright and putting any pressure on internal sutures while they heal, and to sleep with pillows elevated.
To minimise the risk of haematoma or excess bleeding, you will need to be up and walking as soon as possible and drinking plenty of fluid.
What to know before body lift surgery
You will need to be in good health and at a maintained, desired weight. This includes maintaining healthy eating habits and, if you smoke, quitting.
It’s important to note that body lift surgery is not a weight loss procedure or a substitute for weight loss. This surgery is typically considered after a person has achieved and maintained a stable weight following significant weight loss.

Risks associated with body lift surgery
Any invasive surgical procedure poses risk. These risks will be discussed with you in detail at your consultation.
- Anaesthesia – Some patients experience an adverse reaction to the anaesthesia. If you’ve experienced a bad reaction to anaesthesia before it is crucial you mention this to your surgeon during the consultation.
- Bleeding – Bleeding can occur and while a little light bleeding is no concern, excessive bleeding may require a return to operating theatre. Fortunately, this is rare.
- Bruising (Ecchymosis) – Bruising after body lift surgery, or discolouration of the underlying skin is not uncommon but should subside during recovery.
- Infection – You will be provided with the right antibiotics to prevent any posed risk of infection. Following postoperative care procedures is the best way to avoid any risk of infection.
- Numbness – It is rare for permanent numbness to occur; however, it is possible for the numbness to occur in surrounding the operated site.
- Poor Scar Healing – Noticeable healing and bad scarring are extremely rare. Poor scar healing is virtually unheard of when postoperative scar care is followed closely.
