Mass weight loss patients will most likely be left with excess skin. Luckily, this can be removed through body lift surgery.
Many patients who undergo weight loss surgery often find themselves left with excess skin requiring a body contouring procedure for removal. The areas of the body they usually find most affected by excess skin and fat are the abdomen, flanks and buttocks, breasts, back, inner thighs, and arms.
Fortunately, body lift surgery, also known as body contouring surgery, can help correct this by using one or more procedures in conjunction to do so.
What is involved in body lift surgery?
Body lift, similar to a mummy makeover, is a post-weight loss surgery package to help remove excess skin left post-weight loss surgery. Procedures included in this packages can include:
- Arm lift – This procedure aims to correct the sagging of the upper arms.
- Breast lift – This procedure aims to correct the sagging, flattened breasts.
- Facelift – This procedure aims to correct the sagging of the midface, jowls and neck.
- Lower body lift – This procedure aims to correct the sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, inner and outer thighs.
- Thigh lift – This procedure aims to correct the sagging of the inner thigh.
- Tummy tuck – This procedure aims to correct the excess skin hanging over the abdomen.
Which procedures you wish to undergo will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation with Dr Leo Kim.
Body Lift Recovery
During recovery, patients may be advised to prevent situations where bending or lifting is required. This can be restricted for the first couple of weeks.
Depending on the intensity of the procedure, Dr Leo Kim may also instruct you to avoid standing fully upright and putting any pressure on internal sutures while they heal, and to sleep with pillows elevated.
To minimise the risk of haematoma or excess bleeding, you will need to be up and walking as soon as possible and drinking plenty of fluid.
What to know before body lift surgery
You will need to be in good health and at a maintained, desired weight. This includes maintaining healthy eating habits and, if you smoke, quitting.
Remember body lift surgery is strictly a post-weight loss procedure and is not a weight loss surgery or weight loss alternative. You will have need to lose the bulk of your excess weight before the surgery.

Risks associated with body lift surgery
Any invasive surgical procedure poses risk. These risks will be discussed with you in detail at your consultation.
- Anaesthesia – Some patients experience an adverse reaction to the anaesthesia. If you’ve experienced a bad reaction to anaesthesia before it is crucial you mention this to your surgeon during the consultation.
- Bleeding – Bleeding can occur and while a little light bleeding is no concern, excessive bleeding may require a return to operating theatre. Fortunately, this is rare.
- Bruising (Ecchymosis) – Bruising after body lift surgery, or discolouration of the underlying skin is not uncommon but should subside during recovery.
- Infection – You will be provided with the right antibiotics to prevent any posed risk of infection. Following postoperative care procedures is the best way to avoid any risk of infection.
- Numbness – It is rare for permanent numbness to occur; however, it is possible for the numbness to occur in surrounding the operated site.
- Poor Scar Healing – Noticeable healing and bad scarring are extremely rare. Poor scar healing is virtually unheard of when postoperative scar care is followed closely.
